In a Facebook post, Maddox shared photos of showing off the park, which is located directly below the Hugh R. Thomas Bridge that leads from Downtown Tuscaloosa into Northport.

“Today is an exciting day because River District Park is officially open,” Maddox said in the post. “My team sent a preview last night of the RGB lighting throughout the park and under the Hugh R. Thomas Bridge and we’re so happy with how the lights and the entire park turned out.”

Maddox said the park will serve as the gateway to the Western Riverwalk expansion. Construction for the expansion is expected to begin next year.

Maddox said the riverwalk will also be connected to the Saban Center, which will open in 2025, and a planned medium-sized events center expected to be developed in the same area.
