Petty's Huge Numbers Help Stillman Win Season Opener

The Stillman College basketball season is officially underway. Senior guard Trey Petty helped push the Tigers past Rust College on the road in the season opener.

With the 2019-2020 basketball season being cancelled due to COVID-19, the Stillman Tigers have begun their new season. On the road for their season-opening game, the Tigers rolled past Rust College with an 89-73 win.

According to a press release from Stillman College Athletics, Senior guard Trey Petty scored a career-high 38 points to go along with 14 rebounds and 12 assists for his first Stillman triple-double and the fifth in the NAIA this season.

I spoke to Petty about preparing for this season and the team's chemistry displayed in the season opener. Petty described pre-season as a struggle for the team because we had taken some time off cause of the pandemic. But since we've been back, everybody is getting back in shape and building chemistry as a team."

He said the win was made possible because the Tigers were in better condition than their opponents. Petty also stated that in the season-opener, on a scale on 1-10,  the Tigers' team chemistry was "definitely a 10."

Petty was joined by Stillman returners Ladarius Carter's 18 points and Derrick Finklea's 12 points. First-year Tiger Tomias Brand scored nine. The win is Stillman's sixth-straight win in a season opener and comes 330 days after the 2019-2020 season was cancelled due to COVID-19 shutdowns.

Senior guard Trey Petty hopes to win the conference and the National Tournament by the end of his senior season.
