Shelton State Community College (SSCC) is poised to revolutionize healthcare education in rural Alabama with the aid of a substantial grant of nearly three million dollars. This funding will enable the establishment of a Healthcare Academy, catering to both high school students and community members.

The initiative, spread across various campuses including Bibb Medical Center (BMC), Bibb County High School, Bibb County Career Academy, and West Blocton High School, aims to bridge the healthcare gap in rural areas.

One of the standout features of the Healthcare Academy is its practical approach, offering students opportunities to work at BMC outside of school hours, providing both valuable experience and a source of income. Additionally, vocational and academic courses will prepare students for employment in the local healthcare sector, ensuring they are hire-ready upon completion.

The program's comprehensive support services, including tutoring, ACT prep, and career coaching, are designed to identify and address skill gaps while guiding participants towards meaningful career pathways in healthcare. Moreover, childcare and transportation assistance will be provided to ensure accessibility for all.

Funded under the 2024 Alabama Centers for Rural Healthcare Opportunity appropriation, this initiative underscores the state's commitment to enhancing its healthcare workforce and providing opportunities for its residents.
