Residents in Alabama who usually receive SNAP benefits could se a huge change in their benefits when the program begins distributing benefits soon.

Amid the government shutdown, thousands of Alabamians are awaiting the return of the SNAP program so their families can eat. After recent news handed down from the USDA, plenty of those families may see changes with their SNAP benefits.

According to information sent to SNAP State Agency Directors, Alabama is facing a 35% reduction in benefits.

The document on the USDA website says that, "States must continue to process and load the partial issuance files that reflect the 35 percent reduction of maximum allotments detailed in the November 5 guidance."

The memorandum is said to be a follow up to the guidance shared on October 10, October 24, November 4, November 5, and November 7, 2025, regarding Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits for November 2025.

According to an article by NBC 15, DHR is currently updating the SNAP system to calculate each household's benefit at the reduced rate.

It doesn't seem like Alabama officials have much of a choice in this matter based on this memorandum. The document states that "failure to comply with this memorandum may result in USDA taking various actions, including cancellation of the Federal share of State      administrative costs and holding States liable for any overissuances that result from the noncompliance."
