Stillman College Hosting Free STEM Program This Summer
Verizon Innovative Learning and Stillman College are joining forces once again to offer a free summer STEM camp for local middle schoolers.
According to a press release from Stillman College sent to Townsquare Media, a program called Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers will take place at Stillman College from June 5 to June 30. It's aimed at students in grades 6-8 and this STEM enrichment program offers hands-on training in various subjects, including design thinking, 3D printing, augmented reality, and social entrepreneurship.
The primary objective of the Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program is to establish a more diverse talent pipeline for future careers in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields. The camp welcomes participants with no prior knowledge or experience in STEM. The registration process is currently underway, and interested students can sign up at no cost.
The classes will be led by state-certified teachers and will run from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Additionally, lunch will be provided to the students during the program. Andrew Robertson, the dean of Career Services at Stillman College, expressed enthusiasm about the partnership with Verizon Innovative Learning, emphasizing the program's role in addressing the digital divide that disproportionately affects African Americans. He stated that the STEM Achievers Program offers unique opportunities for STEM learning in Tuscaloosa, particularly in the West End. For some students, this program serves as their initial exposure to activities like robotics and 3D printing, which can spark their interest and lead to further exploration of STEM fields.
Verizon launched the Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program as part of its commitment to empowering middle school students in under-resourced communities. The program aims to foster an exploration of STEM subjects, develop problem-solving skills, and expose students to career opportunities in technology fields. As a key educational initiative of Verizon, the program is dedicated to promoting digital equity and inclusion. It collaborates with 45 Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), Hispanic-Serving Institutions (HSIs), and community colleges.
The program's curriculum is interactive and revolves around four educational tracks: immersive media, smart solutions, digital product innovations, and artificial intelligence. Participating students receive mentorship, gain access to cutting-edge technology such as 3D printing, augmented reality (AR), and robotics, and engage in hands-on training that tackles real-world challenges. These activities help students develop skills in design thinking and social entrepreneurship.
The Verizon Innovative Learning STEM Achievers program at Stillman College provides an invaluable opportunity for middle schoolers to explore the fascinating world of STEM. By fostering curiosity, providing mentorship, and equipping students with next-generation skills, this program is empowering young minds and paving the way for a more diverse and inclusive future in STEM.
