There's no question that the Tuscaloosa community needs more activities for teens. This local organization seeks to give teens a positive outlet and space to be themselves.

I think this event is happening at the right time. Every since I moved to Alabama back in 2019, all I've heard is that "There is nothing for teens to do in the city." This event is the perfect opportunity for kids to be in a safe place and have fun with other kids their age.

Lift Alabama President Katherine Waldon spoke on the timing of this event.

"This need has always been in the back of our minds but we thought we need more planning and established support before we moved forward. However, with the recent senseless violence that resulted in the death of a 12 and 16-year-old, we know we don’t have that time."

One of the shootings Waldon is referring to happened around mid-October. A Shooting resulted in the death of a 13-year-old boy in West Tuscaloosa. He was shot and killed while sitting in his room, playing on his iPad.

"If we can provide a safe positive space for our young people then we must do that with the resources we have," Waldon said.

Volunteers are needed for this event as well as donations since kids are not being charged at all for this event.
