More Than a Garden: Community Project Aims to Bring Tuscaloosa Together
A new community garden project is taking root in Tuscaloosa, and organizers are inviting residents to be part of the effort.
As part of NeighborWorks Weeks 2026, CSP of West Alabama, NeighborWorks America and several community partners are working together to create a community garden designed to bring neighbors together while creating a sustainable space for fresh produce, education and fellowship.

The project began with a Community Garden Listening Session held at St. Peter AME Church, where residents were encouraged to share ideas, hopes and feedback about what they would like to see from the garden. Organizers say the goal is to make sure the garden reflects the needs and vision of the community it will serve.
The next step is the Community Garden Build Day, scheduled for Saturday, June 6, from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. at 2715 26th Street in Tuscaloosa.
Volunteers will help assemble raised garden beds, plant vegetables and flowers, beautify the neighborhood and create a space where families and neighbors can gather for years to come.
Organizers say the project is about much more than gardening. It is also an opportunity to build stronger community connections, create sustainable resources and bring people together around a shared purpose.
The event is family-friendly, and children are welcome to participate. Volunteers are encouraged to bring gloves, water and a willingness to work alongside neighbors to help grow something meaningful for the community.
In addition to hands-on volunteer opportunities, attendees can enjoy fellowship, door prizes and the chance to be part of a project that organizers hope will have a lasting impact on the neighborhood.
