Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra Will Pay Tribute to Judy Garland
The Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra is set to celebrate the iconic Judy Garland with a special tribute performance featuring the acclaimed Joan Ellison.
Known for her exceptional vocal talent and deep appreciation for Garland’s legacy, Ellison will bring the magic of Garland’s golden Hollywood years to life, including selections from her famed Carnegie Hall concert and television shows.
Joan Ellison, praised by Michael Feinstein for her "vocal prowess" and "organic grasp of classic songs," has dedicated her career to reviving Garland’s classic repertoire. Her solo cabaret performances, described as “Judy-esque” by Cabaret Scenes Magazine, showcase her near-identical vocal style and Garland's original orchestrations.
In 2016, Ellison took on the significant task of restoring Garland’s original orchestrations, including the recently rediscovered MGM film arrangement of “Over the Rainbow.” She has also portrayed Garland in the U.S. professional regional debut of *The Boy From Oz*. Beyond her Garland tributes, Ellison has starred in classic roles such as Julie in *Carousel*, Nellie in *South Pacific*, and Eliza in *My Fair Lady (in concert)*.
Ellison’s critically acclaimed album, *Retrophonic Gershwin* (2015), further highlights her talent, capturing the essence of Gershwin’s work in a performance praised for its quality and authenticity.
Don’t miss this unique opportunity to experience Joan Ellison’s extraordinary homage to Judy Garland, as the Tuscaloosa Symphony Orchestra presents an evening of unforgettable music and nostalgia.
