New Report Shows Alabama 42nd in Foster Care
Here’s the reality a lot of folks don’t talk about enough. Thousands of kids across the country are still navigating the foster care system every single day, and where you live can make a big difference in how that experience plays out.
According to an article by SmileHub, nearly 330,000 children in the United States are currently in foster care. The organization just dropped its 2026 report breaking down which states are doing the best job supporting those kids and which ones still have some serious work to do.

When it comes to Alabama, the numbers tell a mixed story.
Alabama ranked 42nd overall in the nation for foster care support. That puts the state in the lower tier, especially when compared to others making stronger investments in resources and protections for children.
Now, it’s not all bad. Alabama came in 15th for the share of children adopted within three years, which shows progress when it comes to helping kids find permanent homes. The state also ranked 19th for the share of children in foster care.
But there are still some areas raising concern.
Alabama landed 35th for its maximum monthly foster care stipend, 34th for the average number of days children spend without a family each year, and 35th for equality laws and regulations protecting kids in the system. Those are the kinds of gaps that can directly impact a child’s stability and long term outcomes.
SmileHub says the rankings were based on 19 different metrics, including adoption rates, re entry into the system, and overall support structures for foster children.
Bottom line, while Alabama is making strides in some areas, there’s still work to be done to make sure every child in the system has the support, stability, and opportunity they deserve.
