City & County Schools Announce Free Breakfast & Lunch Program Amid Shutdowns
The nutrition programs at the Tuscaloosa County School System and Tuscaloosa City Schools have announced they will provide free school breakfast and lunches for area children amid the statewide shutdown of public schools caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.
The meals will be provided free of charge to children 18 and under from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. beginning next Monday, March 23rd. The children do not have to be students enrolled in either school system to receive lunches, but a child must be present to receive the bagged food.
Pickup sites Vance Elementary, Brookwood Elementary, Holt High, Maxwell Elementary, Taylorville Primary Sipsey Valley Middle, Northside High, Flatwoods Elementary, Faucett-Vestavia Elementary and Crestmont Elementary in the Tuscaloosa County School System.
For Tuscaloosa City Schools, sites include the Alberta School of Performing Arts, Central High School, Woodland Forrest Elementary, Northside Middle, Skyland Elementary and Westlawn Middle.
Mobile sites, which will operate with the same hours, include Buddy's Food Mart, Hay Court Apartments, Rosedale Apartments and Southview Elementary.
Nutrition Ignition, the mobile feeding unit of the county school systems, will be in different locations at different hours:
Green Village Community from 9:45 until 10:10, Valley Hill from 10:40 until 11:00, Cresent East from 11:20 until 11:50, Brown House from 12:35 until 12:55, Knoll Circle from 1:05 until 1:25 and Cresent Trace from 2:00 until 2:25.
We applaud these community leaders for coming together in these times and making sure no Tuscaloosa area children go hungry just because they aren't in class.
