West Alabama Garden Project Brings Community Together
A growing community effort in Tuscaloosa is bringing people together through fresh food, hands-on work, and a shared purpose.
During an interview with Townsquare Media personality DreDay, representatives from CSP West Alabama, including Antwon Prince and Que Chandler, shared how their community garden project is already making an impact and how others can get involved.
The organization recently hosted its first community build event on Marc 21, where about 20 residents came together to help construct raised garden beds and plant fresh produce.
“We planted tomatoes, kale, collards, sweet peas, jalapeños, cucumbers, squash,” Prince said. “It was a great turnout and a great start.”
The project has continued to grow with support from local partners. Donations from the Federation of Southern Cooperatives helped get the garden started, while additional materials from Hinton Lumber are helping expand it even further. Community members are also stepping in, including a neighbor with construction experience who is helping build more beds.

Now, the next phase is underway.
CSP West Alabama is hosting a community build day on April 25 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 2715 26th Street. Volunteers will help build additional garden beds, spread materials, and continue developing the space.
The event is open to anyone who wants to help or simply connect with others. There will also be activities for kids, food, and even a visit from a local ice truck.
“It’s about getting involved, learning, and fellowship with the community,” Chandler said.
Before that, the group will also host a listening session on April 18, giving residents another opportunity to share ideas and stay connected.
At its core, the project is about more than gardening. It’s about building something that grows people just as much as it grows food.
