Free Mental Health Event for Tuscaloosa Teens On May 20th

Mental health is something that is a growing concern not just for adults in America, but for teenagers as well.

According to the World Health Organization, depression, anxiety and behavioral disorders are among the leading causes of illness and disability among adolescents.

When facing mental health issues, suicide is often something people may deal with.

The World Health Organization says that suicide is the fourth leading cause of death among 15-29 year-olds.

Teenagers in Tuscaloosa will have some support when facing mental health issues with this upcoming free event presented by the Kristen Amerson Youth Foundation, and Shelton State Community College.

Our youth deal with so many emotions and their feelings are often overlooked. We want to provide them with a space where they can be heard, said Joseph Eatmon.

Eatmon is a part of the Teen Mental Health Summit that will take place on May 20th at 10a on the campus of Shelton State Community College. "Often times we have summits and bring in speakers to talk to our youth but they don’t get an opportunity to talk and be heard. That’s what this event is about. It’s about us listening to them and connecting them with resources to deal with life."

The teen summit will feature free food, mental health resources, panel discussions, games, prizes, and entertainment. Topics will include digital depression, bouncing back from trauma, self-awareness, and more.

It's ok to admit that sometimes adults may not understand what teens deal with, "that’s why events like this are important, said Eatmon.

"It’s about providing a safe space for our young people to open up and talk about what they are dealing with and how it makes them feel"

The Teen Mental Health Summit will began at 10a on May 20th at Shelton State Community College on the Martin campus in the D-rooms.
