The Houston Texans announced Sunday they have officially signed former Alabama defensive back Shyheim Carter after a successful rookie minicamp tryout.

He was currently serving as a graduate assistant for Alabama. In his four-year career, Carter played in 50 career games and made 23 starts for the Crimson Tide at the STAR position.

Carter came to Tuscaloosa as a unanimous four-star prospect in the 2016 recruiting cycle. ESPN ranked him as the No. 40 player overall, the No. 6 cornerback and No. 4 player in the state of Louisiana.

In his career, Carter recorded 100 tackles, six tackles for loss, three interceptions, two pick-sixes, two forced fumbles, and 18 pass breakups.

After going undrafted in the 2020 NFL draft, Carter signed with the New York Jets. Carter was then added to the Atlanta Falcons practice squad in September.

"I think Shyheim Carter would fit in probably one of the top two or three players on the team from a knowledge standpoint," Nick Saban said about Carter back in 2019. "He can answer every question in a meeting about every position. He would be a great, great coach. I think that’s what creates a lot of diversity for him as a player, to be able to play multiple positions, because he’s very smart and it means something to him."

Coach Saban also spoke about his versatility in the secondary. "Shy’s actually played every position for us," Saban said. "He started out here playing corner. We made him star because he was a pretty good star. We’ve had him play money at times and we’ve also had him play safety.

The Texans will hold organized team activity workouts on May 24, May 26-27, June 1, June 3-4, June 7-8 and June 10-11. They will also hold mandatory minicamp from June 15-17.
