Survey Shows Alabama Drivers Skeptical of Robotaxis
Self-driving vehicles are becoming more common in parts of the country, but a new survey shows many Alabama residents still are not comfortable with the idea of robotaxis.
According to the survey data, Alabama ranked among the states with the highest level of discomfort toward autonomous rideshare vehicles. About 87.8% of Alabama respondents said they would feel uncomfortable riding in a robotaxi.
That placed Alabama behind only New Hampshire and Vermont among the states most skeptical of the technology.
Researchers suggested Alabama’s discomfort level may be tied to limited exposure to autonomous vehicle testing and services compared to states where robotaxis already operate regularly.
States like California, Arizona and Georgia reported much lower discomfort levels. Georgia’s lower numbers could be connected to autonomous rideshare programs already operating in Atlanta, which is relatively close to Alabama.

The survey also noted that residents tend to become more comfortable with robotaxis when they regularly see or use the technology in their area.
Alabama’s strong car culture and large number of rural roadways may also contribute to concerns about fully autonomous transportation.
The data is part of a broader national look at how Americans feel about robotaxis as self-driving technology continues expanding across the country.
