Tuscaloosa County School to Host Piece of World Trade Center

A school in Tuscaloosa County will house a piece of the fallen World Trade Center this year as part of a project to teach young children about the events of September 11th, 2001.

Taylorville Primary School has been selected by the Freedom Flag Foundation as the 2022-2023 host for the National Freedom Flag and World Trade Center Steel Educational Project.

According to a release from the Tuscaloosa County School System spokesperson, one school is selected from each state by the foundation every year to host a piece of steel from the World Trade Center.

The release said the purpose of the project is to teach the current K-12 generation about the September 11, 2001 attack and to provide a one-of-a-kind historical artifact that complements project-based learning.

Taylorville Primary will host an assembly to share the World Trade Center steel and Freedom Flag with students and special guests in September. The steel piece on loan to Taylorville Primary is from the east face of World Trade Center Tower 1, also called the North Tower.

Students will learn about the steel and the Freedom Flag, which was designed and created less than two weeks after the attacks by Richard Nicholas Melito of Richmond, Virginia, to memorialize those who lost their lives in the attacks.

Taylorville Primary assistant principal Nick Rose said being selected as the host is a great honor.

"The importance of sharing the narrative of resilience, unity, and pride with our students is as vital now as ever," Rose said. "It is thanks to the dedication, efforts, and planning by the wonderful teachers and staff at Taylorville Primary that we have received this prestigious honor."

The steel will be on display at the school for students, staff and visitors for the remainder of the academic year.
