With strong storms and heavy rain expected to roll across Alabama today, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA) is asking drivers to take it easy on the roads. A lot of folks are already out and about for Thanksgiving travel or trying to knock out last-minute errands, and the weather isn’t making things any easier.

ALEA Secretary Hal Taylor is reminding everyone that safe, smart driving goes a long way when the weather gets rough.

“When severe weather is in the forecast, we almost always see more dangerous conditions on the road,” Taylor said. “Whether you’re heading out of town or just grabbing those last Thanksgiving items, slow down, stay alert and focus on the road. One bad decision or one moment of distraction can change everything.”

Tips for Staying Safe in Heavy Rain

ALEA is urging all drivers to keep these simple safety reminders in mind as storms move through:

  • Slow down. Wet roads mean less traction and longer stopping time.

  • Turn on your headlights. If your wipers are on, Alabama law says your headlights should be too.

  • Check your car. Make sure your wipers, headlights, brake lights and turn signals all work before you hit the road.

  • Give yourself space. Increase your following distance and be ready for sudden changes in traffic.

  • Brake gently. Hard braking on slick roads can cause hydroplaning.

  • Wear your seat belt. Everyone in the car, every time.

  • Stay locked in. Put the phone down and keep distractions to a minimum.

ALEA Troopers will be monitoring conditions throughout the day and are ready to respond if needed. Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, check the forecast and travel carefully as the storms move through Alabama.
