Some children can not wait for summer to come, especially for school to be over but, for others, this is the time they dread most. Thankfully, schools have free lunch programs for those who can't afford it, but what do those same students do when school is over?

What most people don't realize is for some kids the only time they have food is when they are at school. Surviving a weekend versus a whole summer can be scary for those parents who struggle to provide for their kids.

According to the USDA, in 2021 food insecurity affected 12.5% of those 18 and under in America, which is about 9 million. What most Americans today don't realize is some kids only eat when they're at school, which is only 8 am-3 pm, so what do they do after hours and on weekends?

Angels Community Group dedicates its time to helping serve over 250 kids who struggle with food insecurity every day, these programs contribute to their communities while also spreading awareness of this issue.

There are also many sources right in front of you that you may not even realize. For example, in the No Kid Hungry Campaign, by simply texting a number, they will reach out to you on the closest free food near you. Similarly, the USDA helpline offers the same services by dialing 1-866-348-6479 and giving you close proximity locations to receive free food.

Tuscaloosa City Schools have decided to step up to the plate, literally. They will be offering free meals to children 18 and under from May 31 – June 30, 2023, for their annual Summer Feeding Program, which includes breakfast and lunch.

The hours of operation for breakfast are 7:30 a.m. – 8:15 a.m. Lunch is available 10:30 a.m. – 12:15 p.m. Meals will be served at 14 locations throughout the city.

2023-2023 Rising Star Character Students of the Month

During the 2022-2023 school year, Tuscaloosa City Schools, along with Townsquare Media Tuscaloosa, Legal Services of Alabama and Child Abuse Prevention Services, will highlight Rising Star Character Students of the Month from each school in the district, highlighting two to three students each month.
