Former Alabama wide receiver John Metchie has been selected 44th overall in the second round to the Houston Texans in the 2022 NFL Draft.

The Texans traded up to select Metchie, sending the 68th, 102nd and 124th picks of the 2022 NFL Draft to the Cleveland Browns to make the pick.

Metchie emerged as one of the top targets in perhaps Alabama's greatest offense in history during the undefeated 2020 campaign, finishing with 55 receptions for 916 yards and six touchdowns alongside Heisman winner DeVonta Smith.

He reached another level in 2021 with Bryce Young throwing him the ball and fellow draftee Jameson Williams helping to open things up for him with defenses forced to respect the deep threat that Williams brought.

Before suffering a torn ACL in the SEC championship victory against Georgia, Metchie recorded 96 receptions for 1,142 yards and eight touchdowns in 2021, finishing his career at the Capstone with 155 catches for 2,081 yards and 14 touchdowns.

Metchie is apparently recovering well from his ACL injury and could even potentially be ready for training camp if he stays on the current track he's on.

While certainly not the most electrifying playmaker that Alabama's receiving corps has ever seen, Metchie was absolutely rock solid for Alabama. He was a reliable and dependable player both on and off the field, and has a shot to be a very good player for a long time in the National Football League.

Now paired with Houston Texans, he will have the chance to do just that.
