There Is Big Money On The Line When It Comes To The Census
They say you learn something new every day. Ron from Alabama Possible definitely taught me something very important when it pertains to the Census.
Alabama Possible is a non-profit organization that's working to maximize the response for the U.S. Census. Ron works with Alabama Possible, and we had an in-depth conversation about the importance of completing the census. I was very open during our conversation in not only my feelings on the census but the reasons why I've heard so many people's concerns with the census and the process. With Alabama not having a great response rate with the census, I felt this conversation was very important.
Admittedly, I haven't always been clear on what the census was for. I knew it was an official count of residents, and I knew it was connected to congressional seats but I had no idea about the huge impact it has on households financially. Ron told me "It's been estimated that about $1,600 per person is tied to the census." That's more than the stimulus checks that were sent out for the pandemic!
I can admit that those figures shocked me. With so many people refusing to complete the census over concerns of privacy, and lack of understanding, those dollars are being left on the table and could help our communities a lot.
During our conversation, we discussed the privacy concerns surrounding the census as well. Take a listen to the conversation and make sure you complete the census by visiting My2020Census.Gov.
I appreciate Ron for taking the time out to have an honest conversation about the census and its importance in our communities. Make sure you complete the census and spread the word. According to USA Today, the deadline for the 2020 census is Oct. 5, 2020.
