Former Aaron Cody Smith is speaking out against a new campaign ad from Alabama Attorney General candidate Katherine Robertson, calling the ad’s portrayal of her law enforcement record misleading.

According to a press release sent to Townsquare Media from the Jay Mitchell campaign, Smith criticized Robertson over her role in prosecutions involving law enforcement officers and said Alabama officers know the facts surrounding his case.

“Pretty wild for Katherine Robertson to attack Jay Mitchell about his support for law enforcement, when Jay was the only leader willing to stand up for me,” Smith said according to the press release.

Smith’s prosecution became one of the most high-profile law enforcement cases in Alabama and has become a major topic in the Attorney General race involving Jay Mitchell.

According to the press release, Mitchell has argued that Smith’s prosecution damaged morale within law enforcement and contributed to staffing issues inside the Montgomery Police Department.

Smith also accused Robertson of turning her back on officers during prosecutions involving police.

“You don’t get to oversee the destruction of a good officer’s life, continue to prosecute other innocent cops, and then pretend to back the blue,” Smith said according to the press release.

Mitchell previously announced plans for a “Critical Incident Assessment Team,” which according to the press release would review officer involved cases early to determine whether prosecutions are supported by evidence.

“If you wear a badge, love someone who wears a badge, or value living in a safe community, the choice for Attorney General is clear,” Smith said according to the press release.

Alabama’s Republican primary election for Attorney General is scheduled for May 19.
